Hawaii has always been a place where we hoped Beach Ultimate would be played. However, most beaches just don’t have (enough) sand. Today however we found out that there are indeed some crazy people slogging through through the sand.
Even better, there is a highly spirited league where teams cheer for the other team after the game, and where raffle tickets are given out to the most spirited man and woman on each team (by the opposing team) after each game.

Chicago Sandblast 2012: History
Every July, players flock to the same groomed beaches to celebrate a new summer by playing a little Ultimate. But these teams aren’t overlooking the Pacific in Santa Monica or even from the Atlantic in Wildwood, New Jersey. Instead they are gathering in the heart of the country, looking out over Lake Michigan.
Sandblast, is returning to Montrose Beach, minutes from downtown Chicago, for its 12th consecutive year this July 7-8. Despite boasting a number of familiar teams returning year after year, this tournament is almost unrecognizable from its original self. What was once a small-scale tournament for Chicago players to get together has transformed into a major Ultimate event that attracts spectators, sponsors, and teams from around the country.

Easter weekend was great!
Easter weekend is always a holy weekend for Beach Ultimate Lovers with its mecca in Rimini for Paganello. Again it was a great weekend that was topped off by great finals. The Open final was won by the Scandal from Chicago, edging out the equally flamboyant international pickup team SeXXXpensive 10-9.
Luca Miglioretto from SeXXXpensive making a sick layout!
In the meantime, an African Easter tradition is also growing: FEAST (Frisbee East Africa Sand Tournament). This tournament in Mombasa, feeling the heat from the Indian Ocean, was won by Team Uganda who had to travel 27 hours in a bumpy bus to beat South Sudan 13-9.
The Sudan and Uganda teams after the finals.
Australian Beach Nationals
Beach Ultimate is getting support in Australia… The first ever Australian Beach Nationals are going to happen May 19-20 on the lovely southern beaches of the Gold Coast.
There will be Open, Women and Mixed divisions.

Beach Ultimate at the end of the world
In two days the Ocean Beach Ultimate Hat tournament will be held, 2012 in Whangarei Heads, New Zealand. It promised to be two days of amazing beach Ultimate, with welcome beers/bag of wine, free gifts, buffet style dinner, beach-side camping, swimming (possibly with dolphins), sun, and smiles.
Mind you, Whangarei Heads is some 30 minutes from the nearest town. As such, it is an isolated community with a limited fresh water supply. Toilet facilities are long-drop toilets and the only shower is cold water supplied by a roof collected supply which may not be available. So players are roughing it 🙂
But who needs toilets and showers when, according to the organizers, there is possible Tsunami watching? Clean in a jiffy! 😉
A week later, crazy Aussie players are celebrating 2012 as the final year of civilization, so they consider playing the last-ever, best-ever Terrigal Towel a must. (BTW, its pure rumor that they already booked for next year, and besides, who’s going to bill them the cancellation fee?)
So there you have it: Beach Ultimate fun down-under: Tsunamies and the end of the world 🙂
Watch out… Hammer!!
UPDATE: Beach law in LA to be changed
Earlier this week we blogged about the LA law that might get disc players a $1,000 fine. Today we can say that the Beach Ultimate community successfully requested a rewrite of the Frisbee- and ball-playing section of the new ordinance.
The new language will clearly state that “such activities by small groups and individuals are allowed at all times on the County beach” unless lifeguards direct otherwise for public safety reasons.

They will be playing Easter weekend (April 6-9) with games on Saturday and Sunday (April 7-8).
So far they have interest from teams in:
- Kenya (Kisumu and U. of Nairobi)
- Ethiopia
- Rwanda
- South Sudan (the newest country in the world)
- Tanzania (Mwanza and Arusha)
- Uganda
- Zambia

$1,000 Fine for throwing a disc at the beach?
Just after posting that Beach Ultimate in LA is going well, up comes this piece of news:
The Board of Supervisors this week agreed to raise fines to up to $1,000 for anyone who throws a football or a disc on any beach in Los Angeles County between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
Fortunately there are exceptions when a person obtains a permit, but still….
