New Zealand 2008: 4 weekends 4 tournaments

Each year BULA promotes a new tournament somewhere on the globe. These series are called the Beach Ultimate Traveling Tournaments (BUTT). We are still waiting for confirmation of the 2007 location, but the 2008 location has been determined and it will be a great one: New Zealand! Four weekends, four tournaments!
Starting 2 & 3 February 2008, at Otaki Beach (one hour north of Wellington) the “Wellington Wild Wind” mixed hat tournament will make its debut. After 2 days of playing and partying the tournament will move up the North Island. Three more beach tournaments will follow over successive weekends. Costs, maps, links, accommodation and other details to follow.
Below is a first picture showing a view of the beach, and an insert of the grass area with BBQ and seating area adjoining the beach. With a river a few hundred metres away, the weather brings different surfaces to the beach, such as the shells showing in this photo, or lots of driftwood (fires!). But no worries, it is very easy to groom 🙂

For any (Beach) Ultimate player, that loves to travel and wants to visit one of the most beautiful countries in the world, this will be an experience that should not to be missed. Thyl ‘Kuki’ Luyckx (1969-2006)

We were shocked to find out that Thyl ‘Kuki’ Luyckx died on the night of 14-15th of October. Thyl was a big part of (Beach) Ultimate in Europe. He helped organize, and was a passenger on, the Magic Bus that went from the World Championships Grass Ultimate in Finland to the World Championships Beach Ultimate in Portugal in 2004. There he played for the German Master’s team and was a big help to the organizers. He visited many other Beach Ultimate tournaments and was always fun to have around. His death is a loss to us all and we wish his family and friends strength in coping with his loss.

Luxembourg latest country interested in WCBU

Luxembourg is the 48th country interested in participating in the World Championships Beach Ultimate to be held in Brazil, 11-16 December 2007. Will we get 50 countries interested? We are waiting for a response from Chinese Taipei and perhaps there is another country out there that wants to play too…
Here is one of the players from Luxembourg (Bob Krebbs) on offense in a game against Diz-Cu Sr. in Portugal.

San Pancho Beach Ultimate

On May 5-7th, Anikan (NGO) and Jalisco’s Ultimate Frisbee Asociation organized an Ultimate Frisbee tournament to be played on the beach of San Pancho, Nayarit, Mexico. The purpose of the tournament, asides from throwing the disc around and hanging out, was to raise some funds for some of Anikan’s environmental projects.
Many participants with their friends and families showed up. A total of 36 participants signed up to play: two local frisbee enthusiasts, 14 players from the Guadalajara “Anfibios”, 10 teachers from the American School of Guadalajara, and another 10 players that came all the way from San Luis Potosí (mexican city). The youngest player was only six years old and he actually got to play the final match.

Robotic Frisbees of Death

disc_uav.jpgIt ain’t easy, picking out evil-doers in the urban canyons of the Middle East; there are so many places to hide. Taking ’em out can be even harder, what with all those noncombatants hanging nearby. But the Air Force thinks it might have an answer to this most vexing problem in counter insurgency: FRISBEES.
