What Happened at Against the Grain 2006?

(by Stacy Hubbard)
The fourth annual Against the Grain beach tourney in Seaside, Oregon went off without a hitch! We had fantastic weather- with no wind to speak of! We had a very competitive field this year, and I think the teams are getting stronger every year. The beach was packed, and people sure enjoyed swimming between games. The backdrop of the mountains is one of me fave parts of the Seaside beach.

The party was a blast. Thanks to Denial for showing up first to start draining the bar! (I know Matt Bell did his part as well) I think people really enjoyed the open bar AND, Tim Stackpole’s DJ abilities. The Elks Lodge was hopping for sure. They love us there! Check this pic out.
We crowned a new champ this year- Congrats go to Sandblasters from Seattle! This team has been all 4 years and has always been a fun addition to the tourney. In the finals they played Portland’s Bikini Killers- a perennial contender. It was an exciting final that went the distance. Thanks so much to all my Whor$hack team mates who helped me pull this off. And, thanks to all of you who continue to support beach ultimate in Oregon. Let me know if you have suggestions for how to make the tourney better next year…See you on the sand, Stacy ‘Daisy’ Hubbard.

SOTG rating system update

Here is a list with the tournaments that used the SOTG rating system that we released last February:

To add the geographic dispersion, Magic Maggia (Switzerland) and Fiesta en Pie de la Cuesta (Mexico) also have committed to trying the system. Nice 🙂
Initial feedback has been that it is logistically a bit cumbersome (Wildwood uses 4 volunteers to deal with all the score sheets and getting captains to fill them in). Nevertheless the system has received many positive reviews and several good suggestions for the version we will release next year.
If you have used the system and have any comments: we’re going long… so throw the huck!…

Wildwood sets a new record

wildwood.jpg
Yesterday we were informed that Wildwood, the 100% coed, 4-on-4 Beach Ultimate tournament in New Jersey, has 224 teams registered. Amazing…! This makes it, at least in number of teams, the largest Beach Ultimate tournament in the world. (Does anybody know how Paganello (Italy) compares in number of players?)
Wildwood will have 4 volunteers to collect the score sheets for the BULA Spirit of the Game rating system and will be awarding two teams the award: the SOTG winner in the elite 3/1 division and the winner in the elite 2/2 division (in case you are wondering… the numbers refer to the number of men/women per team).
Hats off to the organizers. This is quite the undertaking! 224 teams…

Beach Ultimate in Japan

ebashicup.jpgAfter all these years of thinking we knew about all Beach Ultimate tournaments around the world, we just found out that in Japan, for the last 6 years, there also has been a Beach Ultimate tournament! The way we found it is because someone posted a video of the Ebashi Cup on YouTube.com. Great! Another country with Beach Ultimate. Let’s hope the Asian region will see more Beach Ultimate in the next few years.

Frisbee camera

catchu.jpgI have no idea if this works, how this works, and why this works, but it looks cool: a dics with a video camera attached to the bottom. You can record up to 20 minutes of video and the smart wind vein on the top keeps the camera facing in one direction while it’s spinning through the air. Funky!

Guest bloggers wanted

Bar do Peixe 2006There is lots of stuff going on on the beaches around the world. In Portugal last weekend there was the 10th edition of the Bar do Peixe tournament, Wildwood in New Jersey is aiming to have 196 (!) teams this year, and in Belgium there are 2 new Beach Ultimate tournaments this year… We need more people writing reports, uploading pictures and videos…

Ultimap is back!

Old-timers among you may recall the original “Ultimap Locator” hosted at the University of Rochester. This allowed you register yourself (or your team or your favorite playing field or whatever) using a then-state-of-the-art clickable graphic map. You could then search for people by name or by map–great for finding a pickup game on the road (or finding the guy whole stole your cleats at Worlds). Well, sometime in 2002 the scripts that ran the system broke and there was never time to fix them. Now that has changed and someone created the new and improved Ultimap at its own URL: http://www.ultimap.org
It uses Google Maps for the mapping, so the results may actually be geographically meaningful. There are RSS and Google Earth feeds available (see the FAQ).
Anybody wants to start beachultimap.org? BULA will pay for the domain name and hosting…
