What’s in the bag of a Beach Ultimate player?

I play Beach Ultimate 2-3 times per week. I don’t want to think about what I need to take each time, so I take everything! Of course the standard shorts, dark and light shirts, a hoodie, and sweatpants, but there is a lot more!

BULA badge – To give to special people
Cold spray – Sprain anyone?
Cones – Always bring!
Disc – Go figure

Hackysack – Timeout material
Hat & Gloves – It does get cold sometimes
Holy Seat – For those dirty toilet seats

Powerbar, Dextrose, Gatorade – Anything to help my old body
Sandskins – Like Sandsocks but better
SAS survival guide – I don’t know why
Sunblock – Of course!
Swiss Army knife – Because you never know…

WFDF Rules – Don’t leave home without them
I think I am covered… 🙂 Or did I forget something?

Beach Ultimate, Facebook, and Mexico

What do you think? Is Facebook the new email? When BULA started 10 years ago, email and mailing lists were our main source of communication. Now email is starting to lose ground. People are joining this newsletter much less frequently then 5 years ago.
Now players on Facebook are ‘liking‘ Beach Ultimate, ‘joining‘ BULA, ‘supporting‘ Spirit of the Game, and ‘promoting‘ all three.
Sounds somewhat familiar? If you are on any of the BULA webpages, look at the top of the page and you will see that the BULA mission is to “assist, educate, and promote the spirit and the game of Beach Ultimate”. Clearly these players are all BULA 🙂
Mind you, there are many other ways people can be BULA’ers too… Tournament Directors and volunteers fulfill the BULA mission perfectly too.
Fernando Najera and his group in Acapulco are a good example. For the last 10+ years they have been spreading (Beach) Ultimate in Mexico, and put on a great international tournament.
Every year I write about this tournament. Every year I really want to go. But coming from Europe is no always easy. It can be a long and pricy trip. Nevertheless, if you are closer, or have the time and means, I highly recommend you check it out. I heard great stories about the tournament:

NoTsuOh Documentary Fundraiser

NoTsuOh, the legendary Beach Ultimate team that dominated Paganello for many years is raising money to complete their documentary. The final project will highlight the story about the team during their last year in Rimini, Italy.
They have hired an editor to put together the trailer and complete the project. To finish they need to raise $9,100. It would be great if players can contribute. I know I will.

The Heat is Over

Chennai Heat was 8-10 October on the beautiful Elliots Beach, Beasant Nagar, in Chennai (India). This year the tournament saw national and international teams compete in a 7 Vs 7 (mixed-gender) tournament for the title of Indian Beach Ultimate Champions.
It was amazing. They had over a 1000 spectators just watching the finals alone! There was an MC and one of the players providing live commentary. With Vodafone as a sponsor they were able to put up some gallery seats.
Pictures soon. For now, enjoy the write up in the Times of India: http://www.chennaiheat.com/?page_id=152

BULA in the Wall Street Journal

wsj.jpg
In an article about the commonwealth games Paul Beckett and Tripti Lahiri recognize that the sports played in the commonwealth games are all sports spread around the world through the British Empire.
Then they wondered, just for fun, what sports might appear in an American equivalent of this extravaganza and which countries would be invited into the “U.S. Commonwealth” to compete.
Naturally Ultimate Frisbee was included. They wrote:

“A quintessentially American sport that derives its name from the flying discs made by the Wham-O Corp. of California. Ultimate has elements in common with both (American) football and rugby, to the extent that it involves two teams trying to move an object over a touch line. It also has the best name of any sporting organization we’ve found: The Beach Ultimate Lovers Association. At least, we hope it’s a sporting organization.”

It is Gazos Gambit time again…

US Beach Ultimate…
Sandblast… Wildwood… Leiout… and Gazos Gambit…
Ok, Gazos Gambit doesn’t have 1,000’s of players but it has Edmundo! Organizer, player, and DJ extraordinaire. Edmundo always manages to get a great crowd of Bay Area players to attend and that makes the tournament so special.
Any Beach Ultimate player that is even remotely in the area should keep November 20 & 21 open! Check it out on gazosgambit.org/, or the facebook group he created www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=126792134037261

USA Ultimate welcomes Beach Ultimate under its NGB umbrella

usa_ultimate_logo_detail.gifBoulder, Colo. (September 29, 2010)–USA Ultimate, the national governing body for the sport of Ultimate in the United States, announced today the creation of a Beach Ultimate division and committee to organize, promote and administer the sport of Beach Ultimate.
Recent passage of a proposal to create an official Beach Ultimate World Championship at the World Congress of the World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) called for the identification of a sole entity as the official representative of Beach Ultimate for each country. Upon passage of the proposal, WFDF recognized the current national associations as the governing entities for Beach Ultimate, and encouraged their member organizations to embrace and support this new endeavor.
Dr. Tom Crawford, CEO of USA Ultimate, was present for the proposal and discussion in Prague: “We were very supportive of the proposal for several reasons, including the large number of our current members who play both beach and grass Ultimate. We see this as a great opportunity to help grow the beach side of our sport and create more playing opportunities for new and existing Ultimate athletes. We also knew we had a great existing group to work with, led by David Hammond, that will make this initiative go smoothly for us and our Board. They are the experts and they will lead this effort for USA Ultimate.” More…
